Psychiatric disorders require integrative treatment for successful outcomes. Research indicates that psychotherapists have a critical role in cooperating with physicians around medication. Three major road blocks are non-adherence, recurrent episodes (prominent in mood disorders), and the need to modify drug treatments for symptom improvement, management of side effects, and relapse prevention. Psychotherapists need to be well informed about the benefits and limitations of psychopharmacology as well as legal and ethical issues. This workshop addresses specific psychological strategies to improve adherence and prevent relapse.  Participants will learn new developments in medications and treatment guidelines and gain perspective on the significant controversies of recent years. The workshop will address potential problems of suicidality in children and teenagers on antidepressants, childhood onset bipolar disorder (differential diagnosis and treatment), new diagnostic criteria for bipolar spectrum disorders, empirically derived treatment guidelines for ADHD and major depression, experimental treatments for PTSD, and new studies on over-the-counter products such as St. John’s Wort, Omega-3 fatty acids, and SAM-e.  The workshop has a strongly applied focus.  Participants will receive up-to-date medication reference sheets, rating scales, and diagnostic screening instruments relevant for psychotherapy practice.
